slender efficiency

The north tenant space, home to the Compound Pharmacy, is a long, narrow space. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems were a huge consideration during the Schematic Design and Design Development phases of the architecture process. The Revival team collaborated with MEP consultants, Stan Engineers, to ensure the thoughtful placement of equipment and incorporation of systems into the overall design.

Efficient space planning is key to maximizing usable square footage. Public areas encompass the front section of the building and connect to a controlled access centralized corridor — connecting all of the internal workrooms. The high ceilings, contemporary accent lighting, and large windows allow light to flood the space, illuminating the interior selections and artisan compounds. 

The architecture team was challenged with combining the three main functions of the facility: compounding rooms, office spaces, and retail areas. Working with the strict health and safety code requirements in the compounding rooms was vastly different from the other spaces in the facility. Our team had to ensure the Compound Pharmacy had a space where they could focus on the competency, compliance, and conformance of industry standards and requirements. The office spaces focus on marketing to lifestyle medicine physicians — keeping the finishes simplistic with pops of fun color in the furniture. The retail space prioritized product display and an efficient point-of-sale counter.

Wanting to develop an unexpected space, the reception area was designed with a soft curve, wrapped in a durable laminate that emulates marble and topped with a quartz slab. Natural wood tambour faces the hanging soffit, adding a layer of texture for visual interest. Our designers added variation by including open, boxed-out, and closed storage options to display prescriptions, for the drive-through window and walk-in customers, that are wall mounted to maximize the display area and the impact of the space.

In order to provide brand cohesion throughout the space, our designers created a custom wallpaper that lined the wall of the corridor. The neutral color palette brings life to the space without overpowering the narrow hallway.  Each room has a custom plaque next to the entrance, designed based on the compounding pharmacy’s brand guidelines. The acrylic signs are back printed with an intricate branded design while the front features raised verbiage and braille providing aesthetic accessibility. 

Staying local with vendors, Hoge Lumber translated our elevations, sections, and finishes within permit documents and submitted shop drawing for the custom casework found throughout the facility. Our teams worked simultaneously to gather field measurements, highlight hardware specifications, determine lock locations, and specify openings for appliances and finishes — incorporating feedback and requests seamlessly.

hazardous healing

A Medisca consultant was brought in early on in the project to give insight into incorporating equipment and materials for the hazardous and non-hazardous compounding rooms. The tenant’s extensive experience in the pharmaceutical business influences the setup of the space. Lower cabinets needed to have pull-out shelves for ease of finding and organizing supplies. They preferred opening adjustable shelving along the workroom walls so they could see and easily access their supplies when filling prescriptions. The reception area featured large units with adjustable shelves to keep baskets of alphabetized, filled prescriptions — rather than the traditional way of organizing filled prescriptions with bags on a hook.
